Enter shapewear, the constricting undergarments that promise to suck it all in -- or most, or at least enough to keep your buttons and zippers from straining. In many wardrobes, shapewear is considered as indispensable as a little black dress, which, not coincidentally, is one of the things they help you look good wearing. Shimmying into shapewear, manufacturers say, will take off inches, smooth those lumps and shrink you a size, at least for a night.
The most popular brand, Spanx, is as synonymous with constricting shapewear as Kleenex is with facial tissues, but there are many options on the market. Prices range widely, from the $12 variety at Wal-Mart to $30 to $70 for Spanx to nearly $90 for the Yummy Tummy brand. Effectiveness differs among brands, too.
We put out a call for models on the Times Union's On the Edge blog. Women were asked to write a brief essay about why they'd make an ideal shapewear model, and they were asked to send a photo. Burhan was chosen from more than a dozen entrants. Her letter is below:
We took three of the more popular midpriced shapewear -- Assets by Sara Blakely, Spanx and Dr. Rey Shapewear -- and put them to the test. Our model, Ellie Burhans -- a curvy size 10 with what she calls "child-bearing hips" -- learned that shapewear is like homemade gravy: no two are the same. Burhans, 29, shows us the "before" and three separate "afters" of shapewear at work.
In the end, we found that the Assets by Sara Blakely -- the least expensive pair in our test -- was the most effective at minimizing the model's waist, taking off a full 2 inches. She saw the most results in her hips with the Spanx brand (a 1 1/2-inch reduction). None of the shapewear slimmed her thighs. 781b155fdc
